BISHOP WILLIAM
THEOPHILUS CAHOON was born in
Brunswick, Georgia, to the late Mr. and
Mrs. Leonard Cahoon. He is the 5th of nine
children. He graduated from Risley High
School in Brunswick and journeyed to New
Jersey to work and to continue his education.
He earned a Bachelor of Theology Degree
and a Master Degree in Pastoral Excellence
from the American Divinity School, Manhattan,
New York. Postgraduate work was done at
Liberty Baptist University, Lynchburg, VA
and New Jersey State University, Jersey
City, NJ.
While under the leadership of his Father
in the Gospel, Bishop Chandler D. Owens,
Bishop Cahoon responded to the Gospel call
on his life in September, 1962. He was called
to the ministry in January, 1963. Bishop
Cahoon served faithfully under Bishop Owens
in various capacities: Jr. Pastor of Wells
Cathedral Church of God in Christ; District
President, State President (13 years); member
of the State Executive Board and Ordination
Boards; Chairman of State Public Relations,
Spring conference and Holy Convocation inclusive
and; Presiding Elder of the Metro-Plains
District.
Bishop William T. Cahoon and Mrs. Ruth
Carolyn McKenzie were united in Holy Matrimony
on April 13, 1968. They are the proud parents
of four beautiful children: Victoir, Pequita,
Kara, and Kori; one son-in-law, Marvin L.
Tisdale; and one daughter-in-law, Robyn
L. Cahoon. The are grandparents of Juwan
L. Tisdale, Tre M. Tisdale, Darius W. Tisdale,
Ashli L. Cahoon, Eryn N. Cahoon, Victoir
T. Cahoon II and Jaden W. S. Cahoon.
In August 1975, Bishop Cahoon and his lovely
wife, Carolyn, founded the St. Andrews COGIC,
Jersey City, NJ. After a few years, the
building was purchased and paid in full.
For approximately twelve years, the church
grew and developed under their capable leadership.
In November 1984, Bishop Cahoon was elected
to the National Board of Trustees, Church
of God in Christ, Inc., Memphis Tennessee.
During his tenure, he served as the Secretary
of the Board for twelve years. He is now
in his 5th term as an elected officer of
the National Church.
In December 1986, Bishop Chandler D. Owens
appointed Bishop Cahoon of the Church of
God in Christ as Pastor of the House of
Prayer COGIC, Plainfield, NJ. In January
1999, Bishop Cahoon picked up the reins
as Pastor of the New Reid Temple COGIC,
East Orange, NJ.
In March 1991, Bishop Owens appointed Bishop
Cahoon as an Administrative Assistant of
the New Garden State Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
October 2003 marks the 10th Anniversary
of Bishop William T. Cahoon's appointment
and consecration as Jurisdictional Prelate
of the New Garden State Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
This auspicious and Holy consecration service,
amidst a full house of pastors, members
and friends of the New Garden State, was
presided over by Bishop Louis Henry Ford
along with 1st Assistant Presiding Bishop
Chandler D. Owens, 2nd Assistant Presiding
Bishop Cleveland L. Anderson, and General
Board members. This significantly makes
Bishop Cahoon the "Senior Bishop"
in the State of NJ.
Bishop Cahoon serves as a member of the
Urban Clergy of Plainfield, a member of
the Executive Board of the Black Minister's
Council of the State of New Jersey, and
a member of the NJ Performing Arts Center
(NJPAC), and Minister's Advisory Council.
He serves as a champion to address and resolve
issues, which empower and effectuate positive
change for church, family and community.
In 1997, Bishop William T. Cahoon, was celebrated
and honored among the "One Hundred
Most Influential Persons" in the State
of New Jersey.
Bishop Cahoon's life reflects 40 years
in ministry, 10 years as a Bishop, 28 years
as a Pastor, 18 years as a National Church
of God in Christ Trustee, 35 years as a
dear and devoted husband to Mrs. R. Carolyn
Cahoon, father of 4 children and grandfather
of 7 grandchildren.
